We’re introducing custom instructions so you can tailor ChatGPT to higher meet your needs. This feature might be available in beta starting with the Plus plan today, expanding to all users in the approaching weeks. Custom instructions assist you to add preferences or requirements that you just’d like ChatGPT to think about when generating its responses.

We’ve heard your feedback concerning the friction of starting each ChatGPT conversation afresh. Through our conversations with users across 22 countries, we’ve deepened our understanding of the essential role steerability plays in enabling our models to effectively reflect the various contexts and unique needs of everyone.

ChatGPT will consider your custom instructions for each conversation going forward. The model will consider the instructions each time it responds, so that you won’t need to repeat your preferences or information in every conversation. 

For instance, a teacher crafting a lesson plan not has to repeat that they are teaching third grade science. A developer preferring efficient code in a language that’s not Python – they’ll say it once, and it’s understood. Grocery searching for a giant family becomes easier, with the model accounting for six servings within the grocery list.
